Last night in the car Asiel was singing to us all in his most lovely opera voice. Darcy said to him “Dad, I don’t want to be mean or hurt your feelings or anything, but your singing isn’t really very good.” “Really?” he asked. “You don’t think I could be on American Idol?” “Well,” Darcy replied, “you would have to make your voice a lot more like mine first.”

This has nothing to do with this post, but here is our little superstar after her tap recital. It was in the unfinished part of the neighbor’s basement and it was freezing so she wore her coat the entire time.

As a result of being married to a nerd, I now have a bunch of little nerds running around the house. Lately the talk at our house has been all about “the google.” Darcy likes to search for anything she thinks might be helpful or interesting. When she wanted to lose her tooth, she told me to “google how to lose a tooth.” She is VERY particular about making sure it is actually “Google.” Any other search engine WILL NOT do. Dax likes to search for things that he thinks are hilarious, but that I usually have to veto out of concern for what will pop up. This morning he really wanted me to google “how people go poop.” And just now, after a 10 minute argument with Kade over why I will not go to the store today and buy him a toy, he said “Ok Mama. But can we at least ask “the google” if he can send me a toy?”

Anytime there is a prayer to be said, all of the kids must fight about who gets to say it. Darcy has learned that if she just jumps right in and starts the blessing then everyone else will pretty much quiet up and let her finish. A few nights ago at bedtime, however, she started so quickly she forgot what she was praying for. It began like this…
“Heavenly Father,
Thank you for this day. Bless the food. (pause) Ex the food. We don’t have any food…”

While Darcy was off track, the kids wanted to have a sleepover with their cousins

Seven kids under 8! What were we thinking?!!!

During every meal, Kyanna eats only about 10% of what we put on her plate and then smears or drops the other 90% on her head, clothes, chair, and floor.

We’ve found a solution!

I am excited to announce that after two years of waiting patiently Darcy has finally lost her first tooth! It has been wiggling for a couple of weeks now, and on Thursday night she made me cut her up an apple in hopes of biting it right out. It was a (somewhat disgusting) success and the tooth fairy left her one dollar and two quarters. Darcy woke me up at 2:30 the next morning to let me know the fairy had been here, and “would it be ok if she went downstairs to watch tv since she was too tired to go back to sleep?” Nice try.
After Darcy’s tooth fell out, Dax spent about 2 seconds congratulating her before he decided to try and yank one of his own teeth out with a piece of dental floss. His attempt however, was unsuccessful, and he spent the rest of the evening crying that it had been the “worst day of his whole life.” Luckily, he forgot about it the next morning when he got to take VIP cookies to preschool and she had to stay home and do chores.
Since getting a taste of wealth from the tooth fairy, Darcy decided that it would be a good idea to get even more money so she could make a donation to “sick kids who have cancer and stuff.” She is now selling pictures she has colored from her coloring books. The prices are 1 cent for 1 picture or 6 cents for 2 pictures (somebody needs to teach her the concept of a sale…). She has suckered several family members into buying pictures (my personal favorites are the pictures that she colored several years ago which she is now ripping out to sell because it requires less work than actually coloring one). I have drawn the line at letting her set up a “picture stand” on the street so she can pedal her art work to the neighbors. Although a little girl all bundled up in the cold selling coloring pages to raise money for cancer may be a good business proposition. I might have to reconsider…

So after months of training, I finally tackled my first half marathon! I finished the 13.1 miles in 2 hours 39 minutes and 17 seconds, which isn’t very fast (works out to be about a 12 minute mile…and I did spend at least 5 minutes waiting in line at the porta potty somewhere around mile 6). We ran in St. George and there was a group of about 35 ladies from the neighborhood there and we all wore matching purple shirts (pictures to come…sometime). It was supposed to rain, but it held off and the cool temperature was actually perfect. I felt really good until about mile 11 and then I started to get tired, but I finished without too much difficulty and only a little walking. The best part was having both friends and family there to cheer me on at the finish line! Asiel and his brother were there with the kids, and also my mom and dad and Ben and Kristen. I was soooo glad they decided to come!
Some highlights from the weekend…
*While driving on the way to St. George, we stopped at a gas station to fuel up. I announced that I was going to the bathroom and asked if anyone else needed to go. Nobody needed to, so I went by myself. As soon as I came back to the car and buckled up (I was squished in the back seat between Dax and Kade’s car seat), Dax announced that he better go try. So Aaron volunteered to go with him and they went in to pee. They came back out, Dax got buckled up and immediately yelled “OH NO! I HAVE TO GO AGAIN! IT’S COMING OUT!!!” So they jumped back out, and Dax yelled “WE HAVE TO RUN!!!” and they ran in again. Aaron said that Dax had his pants down before he even got into a stall and the second his butt hit the seat there was a big explosion. Maybe you had to be there, but it was hillarious watching the stares they got as they ran into the bathroom the second time.
*The day before the race we took the kids to Jumpin Jacks to play for a bit. Aaron was going up the slides with the kids, and once on the biggest one his pants got stuck right at the top and he flipped and belly flopped down the entire way and every time he would hit the slide he would yelp really loud. He said it hurt, but it was entertaining for me!
*After the race, Asiel took the three biggest kids shopping and left me at the condo with Kyanna so we could rest. Of course Kyanna was thrilled to be the only kid there to get attention, and she didn’t let me close my eyes for even a second. She sat on the bed with me and every time I would close my eyes she would climb on top of me and bounce and laugh until I opened them again. Or she would get really close to my ear and “whisper” (kind of a half whisper, half yell) “I LU YOU MAMA!” A few times she sang “Appy Biday to You!” I loved having the special time with my baby girl.
*The darling flowers and headwraps that Kristen knitted for the girls. Check out her talent here: knitsavvy.blogspot.com
*I wasn’t there for this one because the ladies I went with had a catered dinner the night of the race. But while I was gone, Asiel and Aaron took the kids and met my family at Red Robin for dinner. Of course they didn’t think to bring the diaper bag. My mom and Kristen were taking bets as they got sat down on how long it would be before one of the babies would poop. They had only sat there about 5 minutes when my dad noticed something in Kyanna’s hands and said to Asiel “She’s eating something. Grab that from her.” So Asiel grabbed it out of her hands, looked down, and realized he was holding poop! They said the look on his face at that moment was classic…too bad nobody took a picture! So anyway, my dad ran to Walmart to buy some diapers and Asiel hauled Ky to the bathroom to wash up and came out with bunches of paper towels hanging out the top of her pants. I guess the poop was up her back and he was trying to do damage control! At that moment the waitress came to ask if everything was ok…and they all busted up laughing and had to explain what happened and that dad had been in charge. Luckily, the waitress happened to have a diaper and wipes in her car and was kind enough to lend them one. Too funny!
Overall, it was an awesome weekend spent with family and friends. I will be signing up for another half marathon in the spring before we start training hard for our 100 mile Tour de Cure ride in June. Anyone want to join me?
